was reading this at the animal planet website. maybe you all knew these things but I still think it's interesting.

Q: On Alligators vs. Crocodiles
My name is Michael. I am 8 years old. What is the difference between crocodiles, alligators and crocodilians, beside where they live and the shape of their heads?
Thank you in advance for answering my question.

Diving with sharks, what? [Wednesday

So I was in Florida last week, and I definitely did Sea World Orlando's Sharks Deep Dive. Dude. It was wayway cool.

In which I ramble a little.Collapse )

I have two or three pictures, but I haven't scanned them yet. ¬____¬

I should take a second to say that while I wholeheartedly love the idea of diving with sharks in an aquarium setting, I'm not entirely sure I like the idea that some people seem to have embraced...having people pay to dive with sharks in the wild. One place (I can't remember where, annoyingly) had as many as 200 dives a day, in however-many cages. (And I know there are others that don't use cages.) Which just...eh. Especially the ones that feed the sharks. At least if they're only using chum, it doesn't teach the sharks anything more than what they already know: that occasionally humans have fish guts around them, whatever. As opposed to human=free food. I'm not into that. Humans still -hunt- sharks, for heaven's sakes.

BANGKOK, Thailand — This big one did not get away. Thai fishermen netted a 646-pound catfish believed to have been the world's largest freshwater fish ever caught in Thailand, a researcher said Thursday.

The nearly 9-foot-long Mekong giant catfish was landed May 1 by villagers in Chiang Khong, a remote district in northern Thailand, and weighed by Thai fisheries department officials, said Zeb Hogan, who leads an international project to locate and study the world's largest freshwater fish species.
